Twitter

I thought it would be fitting to mention Twitter in my blog since I use it myself.

Twitter is one of the most popular forms of digital communication. It was created in 2006 by Jack Dorsey who works for a podcasting company, Odeo. They were having a brainstorm meeting when Dorsey came up with the idea. The concept of Twitter is quite simple, the purpose is to send out a “tweet” stating what you are doing or something of interest to you at that moment. You can send out as many tweets as you want and you can also “follow” anyone you want. For example, some of the people I follow include Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, Fox News, and my Integratic Strategic Communication teacher Dr. McArthur. Twitter is a fun form of communication because I can keep up with current events or a favorite celebrity of mine’s schedule while I am telling the world what’s up in my life.

Twitter is the 15th most visited site on the internet according to Alexa’s web traffic analysis. As of June 2010, about 65 million tweets are posted each day, equalling about 750 tweets sent each second, according to Twitter.

Twitter can be used on the internet or by cell phone. I use mine through ÜberTwitter with my blackberry messenger. It is used with all major organizations to communicate to its public because it is quick and easy to access. It allows organizations to market themselves or their product to buyers or potential buyers.

You can see why this form of communication is so widely used. I use mine hourly, so obviously it was a smart invention!

Not having a twitter I have a difficult time understanding people’s passion for the website. I can see how this website when paired with facebook are just the ultimate digital media mediums because these websites allow people to view celebrite’s lives and become involved with things that they are passionate about. Twitter can be espciall useful for public relation professionals because they can update publics and the twitter population about what is going on. Plus twitter has also become a marketors dream with the free advertising, espicaly from celebrities. This is a good ISC connection!
